Drip coffee - how it works and the tools

Before discussing drip coffee, we must first define the word "drip" and what distillation actually is. Distillation is a chemical process aimed at separating the components of a mixture based on differences in chemical or physical properties, such as particle size or boiling point. There are numerous distillation methods, many of which are effectively used in various industries. However, what all distillation processes have in common is the use of specialized equipment.

Drip coffee, also known as specialty coffee, is a type of coffee that requires specific equipment for preparation. It is made by pouring boiling water over ground coffee and allowing it to brew naturally, resulting in a perfectly clear and pure cup of coffee.

When did coffee brewing begin?

The brewing of coffee began in Germany. In 1908, the invention of "paper coffee filters" was patented by Melitta, a company specializing in coffee and related supplies. Since then, the use and consumption of drip coffee has become widespread in most countries around the world, and the industry has evolved over time. In 1941, the world's first drip coffee maker was invented and is still on display at the Brooklyn Museum.

How to make drip coffee

To prepare drip coffee, you must follow these steps:

1- Boil the water to 93 degrees, and make sure to add a sufficient amount of water (the ideal ratio between water and coffee is 1:17, for example, one liter of water for every 60 grams of ground coffee).

2- Open the filter and prepare it inside the distillation funnel.

3- Pour boiling water into the filter until it is wet on all sides (only the paper filter is moistened in this step), which will help the filter to stay in the funnel.

4- Place the ground coffee beans in the filter

5- Pour water into the middle in a circular motion, and you will notice the coffee beans increasing in size.

6- Leave the coffee and water in the filter until it is completely filtered, and you can serve it in a cup or mug.

Drip coffee tools

As we mentioned previously, you will use many tools to make drip coffee. We will mention the tools used, but you may not need all of them.

1- Water kettle: This is the kettle used to boil the water that you will pour over the specialty coffee beans.

2- Brewing funnel: This is the funnel into which you will place the filter and coffee beans during the brewing process. Funnels come in many shapes and sizes, including ceramic and glass.

3- Filter: There are many types of coffee filters, including metal, paper, and cloth filters, each with different properties for filtering coffee. The degree of filtration allows some oils and aromatic flavors to pass through or be blocked. We always recommend the paper filter.

4- A container for distillation: This is where the coffee will collect after distillation (the final product).

drip coffee machine

There are many machines for making drip coffee, which are similar to a complete drip system, meaning all the necessary equipment is combined into a single machine that you can purchase all at once. Among these machines is Chemex, the oldest specialty coffee maker in history. Manufactured by the American company Chemex, it incorporates Chemex filters that prevent many oils from passing through, resulting in cleaner, clearer coffee than using a filter alone.

There are many other machines for making drip coffee, such as the Hario V60, which resembles a cup and has a handle, making it easy for beginners to use. There's also the AeroPress, a drip coffee maker that uses pressure and is compact, making it convenient for travel.

Types of Drip Coffee – Are there different types of drip coffee?

As we mentioned, distillation is simply a method of making and purifying coffee, resulting in a perfectly clear and pure cup of coffee. You can use many specialty coffee beans from different farms around the world in the same way to obtain different types of coffee.

For example, you can use specialty coffee beans from Ethiopia , Brazil , or other countries. Each coffee variety has a slightly different taste depending on where it is grown, the climate, and other natural factors; the difference lies in the type of coffee bean, not the brewing method.

Specialty coffee sachets for dripping (ready-to-drink coffee sachets)

Due to the growing global demand for specialty drip coffee, prized for its unique flavor, benefits, and purity, we've developed instant specialty coffee sachets that save you time and offer a wonderful specialty coffee experience easily and conveniently, anywhere. Simply place the sachet around the rim of your cup (the sachet itself acting as a filter), and by pouring hot water over it in a circular motion, you can easily make a cup of specialty coffee at home, in the office, while traveling, or anywhere else.
